These days, Parton is known for being a style icon just as much as for her musical career and philanthropy work. A lot of that has to do with Summers, who has been dressing Parton for over 30 years now. Acting as her longtime stylist and creative director, Summers has worked with Parton on many winning looks for her performances, films, and beyond. “Designing for Dolly is great, because there are so many [Dollys],” says Summers. “I’ve got the philanthropist, the singer, the actress, the theme park owner. If there is one thing we have learned from Princess Catherine’s royal wardrobe over the years it is that she knows what suits her and sticks to it. We can expect to see this exact outfit formula for many more royal outings to come. Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks will co host the 2023 Academy of Country Music Awards (ACM Awards) on Thursday in Frisco, Texas. Parton is no stranger to the ACM stage She’s performed at the ceremony many times over the years, and collected many awards at it, too. However, this year, Parton will debut the lead single of her forthcoming rock album, titled Rockstar, at the show—and she’ll be doing it in style. “She’s going to wear a lot of diversity,” says Steve Summers, Parton’s longtime stylist, of her upcoming ACM wardrobe. “She’ll go from very bright, to very demure to very country—and a little bit of everything in between. Her performance at the end of the show is going to be epic.”
Of course, when you think of Dolly style, you can’t help but think of her glitzy, fabulous stage fashions. “I really loved the mirrorball outfit that she wore last year to open the ACM Awards,” says Summers. Turns out, everything Parton wears is customized. “Even if she wears a dress that’s off the rack, it doesn’t look like it by the time she gets it on,” says Summers. “There’s a customization that happens no matter what she’s wearing.” Summers adds that he and Parton’s costuming team make approximately 300 custom outfits a year for the star. “There is an outfit in production every single day,” says Summers. “If she’s doing personal appearances, 10 outfits in a day is not unusual.” Parton’s fashion team certainly have it down to a science by now. Over three decades, Summers says he and Parton now know which garments will work—and which won’t. “Shes been very specific throughout her entire career.
