For his contribution to the night’s theme, Jacquemus wanted to tap into a similar inclination of frivolity. “I imagined this train as an infinite tie made of embroidered flowers it was also Karl’s obsession,” Jacquemus says. “Karl was wearing a tie every day, I wanted this to be an homage to his iconic look.” This year’s Met Gala, which celebrated the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld A Line of Beauty,” featured plenty of full throated tributes to designer Karl Lagerfeld. But perhaps none felt as instantly eye catching and memorable as when a guest walked on the red carpet in a giant furry suit made to resemble Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette. The look, completely obscured the identity of the wearer, almost like a costumed character at a theme park or Times Square. It immediately made many ask, “Who is that?”
The answer Jared Leto. Not that much of a surprise, as he’s a noted Met Gala stunt maker. In the past, the risk taking actor showed up carrying a replica of his own head and majorly twinned with former Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele. This time around, Leto decided to pay tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s famous Birman cat, Choupette, who lived quite the lavish life of private jets and iPads. At tonight’s 2023 Met Gala, A listers were encouraged to dress “in honor of Karl” Lagerfeld. Naturally, certain themes immediately emerged on the red carpet this evening. Namely, there were loads of black and white colorways, bows, and pearls. Kim Kardashian went all in on the latter. (Photo by Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images)Jamie McCarthy/Getty ImagesThe long train moment was part of a larger trend throughout the night—male stars like Jeremy Pope also donned dramatic ones. Attending the Met celebrating Lagerfeld is a full circle moment for Jacquemus. “My first memory of Karl was Nicole Kidman’s backless dress in the Chanel No.5 TV commercial in 2004,” the French designer told Vogue. (In a moment of kismet, Nicole Kidman attended tonight’s Met Gala re wearing the same frothy pink gown she wore in that ad.) “I was obsessed with it and asked my best friend to record it for me, to watch it in my bedroom over and over. I was just a kid and this dress and long train stayed in my mind forever.”
