To begin forming the B’Day updo, Spence pulls the rest of Mai’s hair up into a high ponytail, adding moisture with an Oribe styling cream. For extra length, volume, and dimension, he reaches for matching extensions which he glues and wraps around the elastics in the ponytail—a method he prefers to avoid bulkiness. Onto styling, he adds shape with a T3 curling iron. “For a style like this you’re going to want to tease the heck out of it just to get it to that shape you want,” he adds.
